Pakarena in Aceh

It should be a tour of duty. I came to Lam Awee to see a colleague for solving a problem on a work we do.

After riding on a dark quiet damaged road, my friend and I finally got to Lam Awee, a village at nothern part of Malaca Strait. We discussed the problem and got the clue.

I wasn’t notice that there’s gonna be some event in this place. It was a one year tsunami co-memoration.

lamawee There was a stage stands on a square. The MC, Pak Dirman announcing the performer, Mak Copong, a pakarena dancer from Makassar. I didn’t know who she is and what it is about until I got home and search for some references. But still I stood facing the stage, trying to give an appreciation for an ethnic performing.

Five dancers, Mak Copong was one of them. I didn’t know until the end of their show. Four musicians, 1 suling (flute) and 3 percussionist. My friend - an Aceh guy - commenting on bodo dress the dancers wore.

They begin their show, but I didn’t take too much attention at the begining.

Again, my friend commenting that the music and the dance was very contast. They dance very slow while the music plays in speed.

I’m listening the music, and they got me. I didn’t very much care of the dance. I just listening to the music.

“This is hardcore” I said to my friend, and he seem to agree with me.

I don’t know how to describe it, but I really enjoy it. An alto suling (is it?), two kendang and a bonang. And I think I can feel the soul of the music.

The percussions led the speed and energy, while suling made the melody come to live.

They play dynamicly in speed. Some times I feel that there was a little Metallica, a little Dave Mathews Band and a little Safri Duo. But I definitely sure that they didn’t got an influence from any of those bands, it is a native Indonesian music.

I almost got (what Gatot Widayanto - a progarchives.com reviewer - says as) a "musicus orgasmus", and I realize that I barely know my own country music. They play for about a half hour and I really lucky to see their performance. I blame myself for not bring a good camera. I only took a picture with my cellphone.
